Oscar A. Jonsson

Welcome here! You have landed here for one reason or another, and let me try to answer your questions. I am a scholar of strategy, emerging technology and Russia who is founder of Phronesis Analysis and Researcher at Swedish Defence University. I am open to discussing potential opportunities on research, analysis and speaking opportunities, just shoot me an email at oscar.jonsson[at]gmail.com.

At Phronesis, I am offering research and analysis in the areas of security studies, emerging technology and Russia to governments, universities and the private sectors (e.g. financial institutions and large companies). My background is that I have ten years of experience working in academia, armed forces leadership, and think-tanks, including 2,5 years of management in the knowledge-sector (academia+think-tanks).

My research focuses on Russia and contemporary warfare, such as cyber, (dis)information, political subversion, as well as strategy, geopolitical risk and international law. I am the author of The Russian Understanding of War (2019, Georgetown University Press). I have a substantial media experience in print, broadcast and TV media (see full list). I am also a frequent public speaker on security, strategy and Russia, as well as geopolitics and technology.

I was earlier directing the CGC which is a research center with nine research programs on the political and economic impact from emerging technologies. This included directing programs on: The New Digital Domain, European Tech Insights and the Future of Higher Education. I am currently research director at the CGC leading the work on geopolitics and technology.

I hold a PhD and an MA from the Department of War Studies, King’s College London. I’ve also been a visiting researcher at UC Berkeley in California 2016-17. I have teaching experience from running BA-courses on strategic analysis and warfare in the digital age, as well as guest-lecturing on MA-courses on international relations and security studies.
